Videos and filmmaking as a medium for Science Communication
Do you know why we remember the movies we watched?
And constantly keep thinking about it…
Let us tell you why…
When we watch a movie or a film, we imagine ourselves in it; we feel everything happening to us, whatever is happening in the movie. That’s the beauty of the movie if it makes us traverse time.
But that’s not it. When we are engaged in an enjoyable activity, our brain produces a chemical, dopamine, that gives the body a natural, internal reward of pleasure that reinforces continued engagement. When we constantly think about the movie in our head, the brain signals our body, ‘This feels good. You should keep doing this!’.
Now, you know everything is Science.
There are various ways to understand science, communicate it and reflect on it.
One of the ways is through videos and filmmaking.
Remember, we told you, we are most likely to remember something when we watch it, so why not communicate science through motion media so that it’s easier to remember, becomes palatable to a wider population and becomes a source of entertainment?
This mini-course will discuss how we can utilize video format to communicate science.
This special edition of the minicourse will go on for 15 days and is packed with a lot of depth and insights about elements of filmmaking, ways to connect the bridges of science and filmmaking, institutions and organizations where one can pursue their careers, case studies of famous Science filmmakers of India and abroad, and also networking places where one can meet and greet the fellow filmmakers.
Here is the itinerary for the next two weeks -
