The Science of Science Communication
The guiding light for conducting scientific research is the Scientific Method. The Scientific Method is the process of developing a hypothesis, testing it with experimentation, making observations and forming conclusions based on data.
Scientific research helps us to make decisions based on evidence, which is the whole purpose of why we do science.
Yet, when communicating our findings to the public, we often decide how to communicate based on intuition rather than evidence. We make assumptions about how our words will be received.
However, we know that evidence, i.e. data is a much more reliable measure of how people think, than our assumptions.
What if we used science itself to make decisions about how science should be communicated? What if we used empirical evidence about how people think and behave to tailor how we communicate science?
That is what the Science of Science Communication is, and we will spend the mini-course exploring this idea.
